First Aid: Burns
Burns. Immediately (within 10 seconds of the burn) immerse the burn in cold tap water for at least 5 minutes. If this is impossible (for example, if the burn is on the face and trunk), apply cool wet cloths or pour a pan of cold tap water over the burn. Do not use ice. Cold water will lessen the depth of the burn and relieve pain. Do not put butter or burn ointment on the burn. Do not break blisters. After you have cooled the burn, cover it with a clean cloth or gauze bandage to reduce pain, then call your child's doctor for further instructions.
